Every once and a while it will freak out and bars of something like light are all over the screen. What is it and is there any way to fix/ avoid it?

That happened to me. It makes weird sounds too, right? It also fragments the screen and it skips. It means the inside is fried and you need to send it back via 1-800-4My-Xbox.

call up 1-800-4MY-XBOX and troubleshoot it with the Tech reps there may be something they can do over the phone if not hopefully your system is warrantied because I bought mine and the day after I got it it started freezing sent it in the sent it back more broke then I sent it in it wouldn't turn on at all and all I got was the flashing three red lights so I got a game for my inconvenience PGR 3 big deal that's a launch game worth like 5 bucks. Anyways I was able to exchange it and haven't had a problem yet thank god.
