I heard that employers really don't check to verify that often if a person has a BA like their resume says, is this true? What about an MA? How often do employers check?

This isn't for me, but a family member. A family member has an AA degree and I figured that if she just put down a BA from a crappy local school that everyone goes to it wouldn't matter and no one would question it.

I think most of them don't check to see. They may ask questions during your interview to get a feel for you to see if you are telling the truth or know what you need to be successful in their career offer.

I think it depends. I know that government agencies do, even if you're working for a state-owned golf course. I know there have been times I've hired and not checked these things because I feel that attitude and showing me that he/she wants to be at the company is more valuable than a degree in many ways. However, you really don't want to take the chance because if you lie about it and get checked, you're automatically disqualified as a candidate for the job and if you're found out years down the line (like you've been working for the co. for a while) it can really destroy the work you've done and the working relationships you've nurtured/built. If this applies one could say on a resume "8 credits shy of my BA" or "Working on my MA."
Good luck

There was a woman who worked for my company for 14 years, during which time she told my company that she got her doctorate so she'd be eligible for promotions and more pay. She would interject her opinion on things and then if no one listened, she'd throw the whole PhD thing out there. She had Dr. Daugherty on her email signature too. She really used it to full effect. I got so sick of it, I called Regis University, and you know what? She didn't have a degree from there at all! I had the company do some research and they could not even find evidence that she had an associates degree. I was so happy to see her go down in a ball of flames. What a good day it was when security walked her out.

The smart companies do...the ones that don't check, sometimes get burned. Why wouldn't you want to check on that? People do lie. I don't know what it "costs" them to have HR run down the records, but surely it's worth their time given the investment in a salary-paid person. Why are you asking (expand your question)?

Not really, unless you have to take some kind of liability that is dependant upon your degree. For example: Professional Engineer or Doctor working for someone.
I have a business degree and no one has yet to question or ask for a copy of it. The only time I think they may ask for it is if you are fresh out of college or if you clam you have a degree but you are not capable of doing the job.

Some do, some don't. However, if you lie on your resume, and they find out later (even years later), you can be fired for fraud. It could be very hard to get a job after that.

Well Matt, it appears that you want to pad your resume. I guarantee that if you do pad it, they'll check on it.
