Do a tv news report of certain events. Have main desk reporters, a weatherman, sports commentator, editorial reporter, and some "voice from the field" reporters. You don't have to use battles, but you can do summaries of events like speeches or editorials on the president.

You can also have them do a high school/ms reenactments of the famous figures in the Civil War. Like what would Lincoln and Lee be like in high school. Think Dawson's Creek or Saved by the Bell.

My mom teaches History and every year when she goes over the civil war era she has a group of Civil War reinacters come to the school and do a demonstration. They do more then just the soldier part. They cover clothing styles of the era, medicine, food, and nothing gets kids more interested then when they do the fire arms demonstration.

Why not cover a military "hospital". You could do it in the style of "M*A*S*H," only from the civil war.

Or, you could have a family at christmas dinner arguing about the war, with literally brother against brother.

I always thought it'd be interesting to do an interview with some of the detainees at Andersonville, especially from a Southern perspective.
