Can I use .getElementById('myid') to get an element from some other website?

No, you can not. Cross-site scripting in Javascript is a major security risk and browsers have done all they can do prevent it. If you're interested in using content cross-site, with Javascript, I recommend you look at XML or JSON data interchange APIs (Yahoo has many).
