My Dr told me absolutely no tanning beds while pregnant..but not because of the rays, its because of over heating and that can cause brain damage to the baby. I have a rash too and she told me I can go to the pool and swim and get a Little amount of sun at a time. She said just drink plenty of water and go in the shade and pool every 15 minutes and not to be out for more than an hour a day. I tried it last weekend and it did help the rash a bit but I wouldn't over-do it.

Actually there is nothing harmful about tanning when you are pregnant. It's like saying the pregnant women shouldn't step outside in the sun. Just make sure to tell her that she needs to get out of the tanning bed at the first sign of getting hot. Reducing her normal time in half or even less.
But there is nothing that says that tanning while pregnant is unsafe and I know people that have done it and been out in the sun (all which have had healthy babies)
Good Luck~

And for the people saying that you will 'cook' your baby that is not true. That is like saying that you shouldn't take a shower or go out in the sun. I would just advise her to proceed with caution. Every doctor will tell you something different, but like I said just tell her not to go too many minutes. Maybe only five and if she feels hot at all to get out..

But ultimately it's whatever she feels safe doing.

Its dangerous to go into a hot tub or even develop a fever it could cause a miscarriage. What happens is that your heating your baby up and have the possibility of running the tempeture too high for the baby to be able to survive. Its not a good idea at least not for now. Once the placenta is fully created the heat shouldnt be as big of a deal. But I still dont know about tanning beds. I did know this girl that was about 5 months pregnant and went tanning and nothing happened. But I still wouldnt do it even if my doctor said it was ok.

On the Internet it says it is safe to tan after the 3rd month of pregnancy. The UV rays do not penetrate the first layers of the skin BUT you should use a bed that you stand up in because the beds you lay in could raise your temperature of your body which is not good for the baby. But stand up ones are safer because you are not directly laying on the hot plastic.

No it is not healthy for your baby. Sitting under strong intense UV rays will cook the ambrionic fluid in your tummy. Will i was pregnant i went tanning but it was by the sun. and not even then, i could be out in direct sunlight for more than 30 minutes. So my advice to you is just play it safe and ask your doctor. And not only that but any doctor who tells a pregnant woman to tan by a tanning bed is dangerous.

Tanning is not good for your skin when not pregnant, I would imagine the same would double apply when pregnant. I would think the rays would be harmful to the baby. Maybe she should go to a dermatologist instead. I have never heard of a doctor recommending a tanning bed. They usually advise of the opposite.

I wouldn't...that just sounds like it would be uncomfortable let alone the fact that it gets so hot in there. I am scared to even take too warm of a bath. I would see if there are other ways to get rid of the rash other than going in a tanning bed.

well i suppose i always listen to the advice i get from ym doctor because you assume they know best, BUT in saying that i have never ever heard that a tanning bed is safe during pregnancy , infact i don't think the places will even let you use one when you are pregnant, because they cause your body temp to rise which isn't good for the baby .
maybe she should get another opinion from another doctor or midwife?

I had a friend who was pregnant and in a wedding in the winter. She asked her doctor if she could go to a tanning bed once or twice so she wouldn't be so pale. Her doctor told her no that it wasn't safe.
