I graduated from college in 1994. I got my 4 tattoos in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 2006. They are all discretely placed (hip, ankle, lower back & back of neck). Lots of people where I work see them and say "boy, you don't seem the type!". I admit, I'm a bit original when it comes to matching my likes and dislikes. But, I make over $100,000 per year and am a manager in a technical organization (engineering background). I don't think a small tattoo on your foot will affect anything. Not to mention, I did a speech on tattoos for Toastmasters (we have a chapter at work) and something like 25-35% of people in their 20's and 30's have at least one tattoo. They are no longer an odd thing. Many people have them.
P.S. - My Mom thought I was crazy too.

I don't have any thing too visible, my tattoos are for me. I have a small tattoo on my wrist that I some times get compliments on. I work in retail where they don't really care if you have tattoos as you do a good job and keep any tattoos that could be seen as offensive covered. Most of mine can be covered with our uniform. If you're working in a professional or high end company then most of those areas should be covered when you're at work. Some places don't have policies when it comes to tattoos, it's your body after all but they want to keep their image professional. If you do get an interview then ask them if they have any policies with regards to tattoos.

You know, I was seriously just considering getting a tattoo on my foot a butterfly too and thought of the same thing and searched the question on answers. I really hope it doesn't, I hope companies spend more time worried about the success of it and not about what body art their employees have.

no i don't think that you have messed up your chances on getting a job because the tattoo is on your foot but i would not recommend that you keep getting them because you will get old one day and all those tattoos wont look good

If it is on your foot no one will see it and won't know about it. Getting tattoos up and down your arms may affect you in the private sector.

Yes, if a potential employer finds out about it, they could question your maturity. If they find out later and you have been a decent employee they will just think you are silly. Which you are to scar your body. Tattoos are silly. Think about what you will look like in 50 years. Won't you feel foolish.

Not at all. It's considered improper to wear sandals or open toed shoes in a business environment anyways so no one will see it! enjoy it!
