We have been turning it every 2 weeks like they told us except last week we were away for 5 days and when we turned it over there was mold on the outside cover, yuk. The mattress looks ok, but it smells funny. We can't afford to throw it out.

If you can put this cover outside in the sunlight. The sunlight kills of the mildew, once it´s been outside in the sun add lemon juice let this dry in again with the sunlight . If this is a dry cleaning material then do the same but add lemon juice and salt again leave to dry in . the sponge with clear water. and plenty fresh air to dry

I would try putting some Tide liquid detergent into an empty spray bottle and adding some warm water and spraying your mattress generously. They sell liquid Tide with febreeze in it or with Downy fresh sent and I have used this in several places that have had water damage/musty smell and it seems to work well. If this doesn't do the trick for you they also sell an item called Odor Ban at most stores...I have had success with this item several times as well. I would suggest trying the tide first (cheaper)!

Febreeze works wonders. It may take a couple of times but it will work. Best stuff to get rid of smells.

exactly that. fresh air and warm sun! coffee grinds and baking soda absorb pretty much any smell.
but what i think is much more of a problem, why does it get moldy THAT fast!?!? if there's that much humidity in your house, that's gonna cause much more problems than mold on the futon...

On a hot sunny day put it out in the sun, to dry and air out.

When you have to bring it in spray it with febreze when you bring it in.
