One of the nice things about the Japanese language is it is so consistent.

For example, anytime you see an "a" in a Japanese word, it is always pronounce "ah." In order to get out hard A (ay) sound, it needs and "e" after it (in other words, you pronouce the two "ah-eh", which mimics the "ay" sound).

Since the "a" is not followed by another "a", you know it is a short "ah" sound; "aa" would be pronouce "aah".

The "A" is pronounced like it would be in "father" So with a more rounded "Ah" sound to it. That's how it's always pronounced in Japan. It's either a "short ah", or a "long ah". In this case, it's a short ah.

I hope that was clear enough.

Cheers!

You got it right. They say "manga" because of the way mango is pronounced in English.
