Don't be ashamed about getting your period... your dad knows that women get them, and he'd almost certainly figure it out when he empties the trash or cleans out wherever you store your supplies. Just say, "Dad, I started getting my period. I'm feeling fine about it." You don't need to have a whole big conversation about it, unless you want to. Judging by most men, he probably won't really have any insights for you, but he should know this.

As far as getting some good advice, do you have a friend whose mom you like? That might be a good place to start... women tend to be very sympathetic to menstrual N00Bs like yourself.

I am sorry that your mom is no longer around to help. I have a daughter and I was glad to be there with her when she started her period.

Here's a list of books that you should be able to find at your local library that you might find helpful:

1. What's Happening to My Body by Lynda Madaras
2. The Period Book: Everything You Don't Want to Ask (But Need to Know) by Karen Gravelle
3. (The American Girl) The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls by Valorie Schaefer

Also, The Kotex (www.kotex.com) and Tampax companies (www.tampax.com) have websites that can answer any questions you might have.

If you and your dad are close, you can tell him about it. Handing him a note and waiting for him to come to you to talk would probably be more comfortable for both of you. It will give him time to get over any initial shock that he might have, and you will have time to prepare yourself. Unless you and your dad have problems, you should be able to tell him anything. I'm sorry you are having to go through this without your mother. If you really can't tell him, call one of your family members or tell another adult that you are comfortable talking to.

If your mother has been dead that long (very sorry for your loss at such a young age), your father is already used to the idea of being both a mother and a father to you. Just tell him that you need to talk to him about something important and tell him that you got your first period. It will be awkward, but he'll be glad you told him about it.

well your gonna have to talk to him about it sooner or later. wouldn't you rather tell him then have him notice and ask ? plus in less you get an allowance and have a way to get to the store then your gonna need him to buy you tampons or pads. if anything try talking to your best girl friends mom first. that might make you a little more comfortable with talking to a guy, your father about it. good luck.

this is a hard situation. What i suggest is having a counselor at school, or a nurse to tell him. If worst comes to worst just leave him a note for him to read. lol Good luck and don't be ashamed!

Don't be embarrassed to tell him. I'm sure he figured he would have to deal with this sort of thing sooner or later. Just tell him your going to need to start buy tampons and pads, I'm sure he'll help with whatever he can.

im am sorry about your mom.
i agree with everyone else. don't worry about telling him. he knows other woman that went through it and can talk to you about it. he knows what goes on, so dont hesisitate to ask him! if you want you can ask your school nurse, they have pads. or ask a teacher you trust, or a friends mom. im sure either one of those people would be willing to help.
