If it's the former, then who are we to judge, if it's a sport then of course, one plays to win. However, if the game is a close contest then the joy of the struggle makes it worth it - whatever the outcome.

Yes, but in taking part we need to do our best to appeciate whatever we are taking part in, often that includes trying to win.
If something is worth winning, not everyone can win, so we shouldn't be downhearted because some people did better than us.
If winning becomes everything, then most of our time we will be downhearted, because no one is excellent at everything.
