There was no reason for this to happen. There was no alarm. I didn't even make it to the first door when I was asked this question. Do you know why they do this or has it ever happened to you?

No, CC, Im not embarassed about buying condoms. However, when you buy something it is no longer merchandise, it becomes personal property. You have every right to walk out the door with it. You should not and do not have to show them a reciept in order to take your belongings and go home.

Random. I have had them look at my reciept before. I did not think much of it.
It almost always happens when you have BIG items...TVs, etc. But I have had them look at my reciept with just groceries...I think they checking the cokes on the bottom shelf of the cart to make sure the cashier got them.
It is just another layer of security and cost control.
My opinion

I've never had this happen to me at any store. This could be, as one person said, a thing they do at random. Now, sometimes I choose not to have an item bagged and when I walk toward the door I show the person my receipt, just letting them know I paid for it. But I've never experienced what you've described when all my items are in bags.

back in 1970, interior the army, i grow to be helping off load a truck for the army Commissary in Yokohama, Japan. the days of micro mini skirts, and the pantyhoses have been new nude toe to waist. between the girls from the highschool in the back of the commissary grow to be walking purchase with some friends. The wind grow to be blowing problematical. As she have been given close to the truck, her skirt blew up and my important different stated "hi! look at Michelle" (an extremely appealing jap/black blend, and she or he grow to be standard to us using fact of her dad's place and she or he and her friends could end to comedian tale with us each and every sometimes). I had 2 situations of pineapple juice in my palms and walked off the top of the 5 ton stake truck whilst staring at her. Wound up in a solid for 6 weeks from a badly torn ligament.

They have every right to ask you for your receipt as you're leaving the store. As long as they ask every customer who leaves, they're not breaking any laws. Asking you for your receipt is NOT an accusation of guilt of any crime, but a way to deter people from stealing from the store.
And it works, too.
You should be glad they're doing this...shoplifting means less profits for the store, which means higher prices for goods, which means YOU pay more money out of YOUR pocket!

Random inventory control measures. I've had them ask me before too - what is funny is they rarely go through each bag item for item.
Places like Sam's Club and Costco do this with everyone going out the door.

Actually I don't have a problem with them checking, but I do have a problem if the person checking takes like 20 minutes to log the item into the log book that they keep for electronic items.

The Walmarts I've been to usually have someone standing by the exit asking to see receipts. They ask me maybe a third of the time I exit. So I don't think you were singled out.

Many stores randomly check receipts to discourage shoplifting. The losses due to shoplifting result in increased costs to the consumer, so you should be grateful that they do what they can to prevent it. Walmart in particular is also fair about passing the savings that result on to the consumer. Thanks Walmart!!

They probably ask randomly. I've been asked to show my receipt. Are you embarrassed about buying condoms?
