What you need:

Item to dye (cotton will dye well)
Rubber Bands
Dye (you can buy Rit at Target, Walmart Craft Stores)
Pots for hot water

Boil water and put in dye.

Take item to be dyed and twist it and place a rubber band very tightly around the item. Do this everywhere that you want white lines to be. You can also fold it and put rubber bands on it. Different twists and folds with the rubber bands will create different patterns.

Dip your item into dye. You can dip different parts into different colors to create patterns.

Rinse with cold water.

You can make dyes with just about anything that will stain you clothes. Wine, berries, etc. Some dyes will stay colorfast better than others.
