The Red Sox Marketing people came up with it (Same thing as Boston Globe)

Because K stands for strike out and Dice is how you pronounce the first syllable in his name.

they named him dice-k because his name is Daisuke which sounds Like Dice (Dais) k (uke)

That is how you pronounce his first name and it's easier to spell. It's becoming his nickname as well. I have already see the name on t-shirts.

the reason why he got that name is because thats how you pronounce Daisuke.... in japanese "dai" is pronounced die and the "u" is silent...so his name is pronounced "dice-k"
