There is no such thing as a Democratic Republic, it is either a Republic or a Democracy. Right now with the Republicans in charge we are a Republic.

A Democratic Republic elects people to represent the voters. A Democracy represents itself, without representatives.

A republic is based on a set of rules, with people electing representatives to a body to vote on issues.
A pure democracy is mob rule.

The best example I can think of to picture pure Democracy is the New England town meeting, which ,sadly is also disappearing. In it all interested citizens come, listen to the issues and vote aay or nay. The town council is just the administrative, or executive arm.
