We use minerals for pretty much EVERYTHING and have done so since the stone age (stones are made of mienrals).

Minerals are a primary source of many materials, metal ores such as pyrite, sphalerite, galene and many others are the source of metals, they are subject to a chemichal process that separates the metal ion from the non-metal one.

Non metalic minerals are also very useful, a few trivial examples include garnet which is used as an abrasive, quartz's piezoelectric properties are used in electronics, feldspars are used in manufacturing ceramics, halite is table salt, not to mention decorative uses of gems such as beryl, topaz, diamond's etc.
