I want to work in information technology, yet I've taken free online tests about my analytical skills, technical and mechanical potential, etc. and I either get "average" or "poor". Yet, I want to work in IT even though I'm potentially better at other fields. I do want to improve my analytical and technical skills in IT however.

IT is not just about technical skills. If you are good with people then help desk or training or sales are areas you may want to focus on. If you are organized then look at project management. There are other avenues too. IT people are not one dimensional and often need individuals such as yourself that may not delve deep into the technical weeds to help with bigger picture concepts such as communication, policies and processes.

Do you enjoy it?
Are you willing to work harder at it than if you did something you were better at?
Are you dedicated to learning as much as you can and always working to improve your skills?

If yes -- then go for it.
It is always best to do something you love -- even if you have to work hard at it, than it is to do something you hate because it is easy.

I would follow your interests. These online quizzes are not always what you need to follow. If you like IT then most likely you will excel in it.
