They played the role of instigator. It escalated by Hitler's continued takeover of more and more territory and countries. The line in the sand was drawn on the Polish frontier, however, and the Western allies finally decided to end their policy of appeasement. After the Polish invasion, the game was afoot.

The Germans were part of the whole totalitarian expansion of the axis powers during the 30's. The Japanese already invaded Manchuria in '31 and Italy invaded Ethiopia in '35. Yet the weak League of Nations failed to stop these expansions. Germany annexed the Rhineland in '36 and the Sudentenland in '38 and annexed the whole of Czechoslovakia by '39, months before their invasion of Poland which marked the official beginning of the European theatre. Basically the British and the French followed an appeasement policy which allowed Hitler to expand his nation into a completely mobilized war machine during the 30's. Hitler was already anticipating a war even when Prime Minister chamberlain proudly returned to Britain after the Munich Conference declaring that a global war was prevented.

When Germany invaded Poland in the 1939 Britain and France went to war with Germany, honoring their commitments to Poland. That was the start of World War Two.

CanProf is absolutely correct, and you should award him full points. Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. But because there was a Rome-Berlin-Tokyo axis of alliances, that meant that the U.S. and Germany and Italy were at war also. I do not remember if Hitler declared war on the U.S. in accord with his alliance with Japan. I think that was the case. So: It was not like WWI, when every one piled onto every one else according to a timetable of mobilization. Rather England and France declared war as a result of the German invasion of Poland in 1939. Then followed the "phoney war" of 1940, in which France waited, but Germany did not attack. Then Germany did indeed attack in a blitzkrieg that overwhelmed France. On June 21, 1941, Germany attacked the Soviet Union also. In following years, Germany had to bail out Mussolini's Italy in Greece, where that dictator had also started a war.

Can Prof is right about the European theater; I just wanted to clear up the point about Germany and the US.

Germany declared war on the US four days after Peal Harbor because Hitler wanted to. Germany did not automatically go to war just because Japan bombed Peal Harbor.

Actually Hitler had been planning war with the US for years. Back in the 1920’s he was convinced that Germany had to attack America because we were stealing all of the good Aryan/Nordic stock through immigration and we knew how to deal with inferior races, (the Native Americans and blacks). He thought the US would eventually become so strong through race purity they would have to attack.

Hitler approved war in December of 1941 because he thought the US had gotten weaker, what with its strives, albeit very minor ones, towards racial equality. He was somehow convinced that the US was run by Jews and even FDR was a secret Jew. (I guess he confused God’s Chosen People with God’s Frozen People, the Episcopalians).

Ironically, FDR was relived with the German declaration of war. He knew that Hitler had to be stopped but he was sick with worry over trying to attack first. The US generally never really threw the first punch and FDR didn’t think Americans would stand for such a change in military / foreign policy, especially with most of the US pacific fleet in flames thanks to Japan.
