Everyone is a bit nervous about an epidural. You can't see what's going on back there and it makes you a little nervous. It isn't any more painful than having the IV put in. Just relax and let them do what they need to do to get it in and after you will be able to enjoy the rest of the labor and delivery. They might get you up right after the baby is born and you'll be unsteady on your feet, but don't be afraid to ask for help. You'll be SOOOOO glad you had your epidural when you get it. I'm mom to 3..2 with epidurals and one without.

I had really bad experience with an epidural. I had to have 3 times: First time they did that was wrong place and I was screaming my head of; second - it did work only 10-15 min and I started feeling pain again and that point my contraction were almost 1 min apart, the reason was that tube came out; third time - when they told me that they're gonna do it again I started crying hysterically because for me it was really pain full ...(it was like electric shock with plus your pain from contractions it was terrible) finally it started working but not for long again then my half body felt the pain and another not...at the end they put some pillows under the side was in pain and amazingly it did help but by that time it was time to push for me...Honestly, I didn't have much release from it only when it was time to push so midwife had to tell when to push because I didn't feel anything. It really depends how good and experienced is your anaesthesiologist I think. I'm not trying to scare you but be ready it's a bit pain full experience but when your little one arrives you'll forget about it completely.
Best wishes& good luck!

The only hard part about it is that you get it when your dilated to a 4 or 5. So your having contractions and you have to hold really still or there could be problems. Then the Anastesiologist puts the needle thing in your back and walla it's done. It takes all of 5 minutes if that. Then you lay there and it's the funniest thing because you can't feel your legs at all and like you can't feel if your gonna pass gas so it just rips and you just hear it and it's way emberrasing because people will be in your room and you can't help it. That's the funny part. lol But when your in labor, you wont even think twice about that dang epideral, you'll be in so much pain that you'll do anything to get that put in. If you are really scared, talk to your doctor and he/she will really reasure you that everything will be ok.

Good Luck!!

when you have an epidural they'll ask you to sit up.. while the anesthesiologist inserts the needle into your spine. the uncomfortable part is that if you're seated and you have contractions.. so you'll have to breathe through it... a nurse will assist you and you'll be hugging a pillow... you would feel pressure and then the coolness of the needle... but i wouldn't say it wouldn't hurt...but once they get it through... your lower extremities would feel a bit numb... and you wouldn't feel the pain of your contractions.. you'll know you're having them.. but you won't feel the pain.. and then you're given a Patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) so if you start to feel any pain... which can't be blocked out any more by the anesthesia continuously going thru your body at a controlled rate... you can give yourself an extra dose... that's as far as I know

you lie on your side and sorta curl up, to allow the vertabrae to seperate slightly, letting the needle in. The first needle is a local anesthetic and the second is a large one that puts a plastic tube into the epidural space. It feels weird, like tiny electric shocks you get on your tongue when you put a battery there, but is certainly not 'painful'.
Then the plastic tube is taped into place, and when you need a top up it is just injected into the tube that is already there, so you don't feel it except as a bit of coldness going down your back maybe. It isn't bad at all.

Usually by the time you have the epidural you've been having painful contractions for a while and the epidural is nothing. In fact, I don't remember the epidural pain at all.

I remember being told to lean forward, the anesthesiologist then began to insert the needle, and within a few moments I had relief from the pain from the contractions. I actually told him I loved him. He told me I wasn't the first woman that had ever told him that. :-)

I went interior the path of the suitable same situation, I had exertions precipitated with pitocin and it actual slows down the exertions technique. i did no longer get my epidural till quite a while whilst they precipitated exertions, I waited till they broke my water. The contractions have been fairly undesirable whilst they broke my water and that's when I have been given the epidural. be conscious, they destroy the water in an attempt to get exertions shifting alongside swifter. in any case, i grow to be in exertions for a minimum of 10 hours when I have been given my epidural and it did no longer fairly positioned on off. i ended up having a c-section using fact the exertions on no account did progression and by way of the c-section i began out to experience some discomfort so as that they gave me a shot of a few thing in my IV and it took away the discomfort.

i just had my baby 6 months ago and ihad a c-section. when it came time 4 the epidural, i was scared like ive never been b4. but they numb ur lower back first wich u hardly feel, then they put the epidural which all you feel is slight pressure as if someone was pressing on your lower back. if it helps any, its the waiting that scares people the most.

They give you a local anaesthetic before they put the epidural in. If you get to the stage where you feel like you need an epidural, whether or not getting it done hurts will be the least of your worries, trust me!

well let me tell you a little bit about my experience with an epideral... okay well i just had my son 4 weeks ago, and at first i didnt want an epideral because i was scared to death it was going to hurt, but i ended up having one after they told me how big his head was, i went into the room at around 11 in the morning to get the epideral, they gave me a shot in my back around where they were going to place the epideral, i moved because it was very uncomfortable, its not what i expected, i mean it really didnt hurt just uncmfortable, then they gave me that big shot in my spine, which i didnt feel that because when they give you a shot it numbs the area... well a half hour comes along and i could still feel every little thing... so they tried ANOTHER epideral, well they waited a little bit and i still felt everything, the epideral numbed my legs only, so i felt the whole child birth and everything, did not feel so good, the epideral didnt take for me, i am lucky i didnt have a c section because the epiderals dont work for me, they also gave me a local after he was born so they could stitch me up and i still felt them doing the stitches, so yeah it was very painful for me, hopefully the epideral works on you, and it doesnt turn out like mine did, the contractions hurt really bad, and you know you are getting ready to deliver when you feel like you have to poop cuz i felt like it but they said that it was the baby coming... but they wont give you an epideral until you have dialated to atleast 4 cm... but other then that it was a very cool experience, i felt my son coming through and everything, and it hurt then, but now it was the coolest thing ever...
