You should check into the history of rap, hip-hop, gospel, r&b, rock & roll, jazz & folklore- the cutural of music in general. But your question is in regards to the birth of rap/hip-hop. It is only the evolution of Ol' Spirituals turned into a lifestyle. Back in the motherland, in certain regions, the beating of drums, dancing and singing were forms of communication. Not everyone spoke the same language or were from the same tribes so they developed a way of communicating with each other. Certain drum beats & sounds meant war, celebration, etc. It was then brought to america and used as a form of communication between the slaves. And again, Not everyone spoke the same language or were from the same tribes so they developed a way of communicating with each other. Slaves were often separated from family members and weren't able to gather information about them. So this form of communication was restarted. They would sing songs to warn of impending danger or to pass on messages because they weren't taught to read or write. For fear of understanding their surroundings and the things to foretold to come. Today's expression of rap/hip hop is just the evolution of commnuicating with each other and the telling of stories, singing of songs, dances of celebration and warnings of impending dangers to the community & society as a whole. Take the time to really listen to the music and understand where the lyrics are deriving from, the message the writer is trying to convey and then you can better understand how it came to be. Not all the writers are rapping about bling, money, cars and hoes. Rap/Hip-Hop was born out of necessity.

Yes it would, It would have just taken alot longer. because we (black people) would have created it in africa, and after awhile it would have eventually made its way to america and everywhere else in the world. music is universal, so of course the black man created rap and hip-hop, but whites and other races would have eventually adopted it. Just like now. rap started in america in the streets of new york and now 20 years later its in every single country.

Who knows. They could have still created it in Africa and the popularity could have spread throughout the world and gotten to America, but there's no reason why you couldn't assume that a Mexican or white person could have invented Jazz, Rock, Rap, or even Gospel. All that music was born out of pain and misery. If you expose any race to that kind of sorrow and pain they will create some beautiful art to express their emotions through ways that won't get them killed. Plus if it weren't for the whites teaching them english, giving them instruments, and showing them how to express themselves through art there wouldn't even be Gospel and Jazz. The truth is that it was a combination of different influences to create wonderful music like that. Make your time machine and find out if Rap would have been invented. Not alot of guitars and microphones in 1700's Africa, you know.

not in its present form. But Africa has a very ancient oral tradition. But hip-hop (would have been called something else thats for sure) would probably still have evolved except there wouldn't be as much to sample from ... lol.

No, neither would gospel, blues, jazz, rock, or damn near any other popular american genre!
However..
The main ingredients of hip hop music is the poet and the drum, both existed in Africa BEFORE the trans-atlantic slave trade.

Nor Jazz, nor Rock, nor the blues, or funk or soul or r&b, or really good dance, or "cool badassness".
We don't only contribute to crime and welfare. What I think make the US tops is all culture coming together and learning from one another and making a whole new style of art...awsome.
