Obviously the question has been answered, but if you have renters or homeowners insurance it may be covered at a pro-rated rate. It may not get back your laptop but it might return some cash. Also if it was "taken" out of your car an a police report was filed some (not many) car policies may cover it. If you don't get it back and you have a service plan you can cancel it and recover some money that way. Sorry it may not be the answer you want, but hopefully it may help.

No you can't track it by the IP address, the ip address is assigned by the network you are on. If you don't a lo-jack type program for your laptop recovery is unlikely. The only way would be to get access to every ISPs records and search them for the MAC address of your Network Card, not even the police can get this kind of access and it will would be a long shot. Ofcoures this assuming you know your network cards MAC address.

No. The IP address comes from the connection, not the machine.

The machine has a code called a MAC address that could be used, but finding it would be a needle in the haystack sort of thing and you would have to know what the MAC address is in the first place.

open a command prompt, type: telnet (the IP address of your laptop) 139. I believe port 139 is the most commonly opened port. If it is opened on your laptop then you will be able to trace it.
Or go to start, all programs, accessories, communications, remote desktop connection, then type in your IP address and click connect. This may or may not work.

i'm pretty sure you're screwed. the i.p. address is really only a location assigned to a cpu when it logs onto the web. if you knew the exact name of your laptop (which are usually assigned automatically and are very complicated usually) you could probably try some type of netbios hacking to try to find it, as long as it was still somewhere in your general area. this won't work though unless you've set your laptop up to enable netbios in your advanced tcp/ip settings (which allows other computers to access yours over the internet).

No you can not Ip addresses are assigned to the computer by the ISP or a DHCP server. Computers can change ip addresses like we change underwear.
