Is there a way to make the power button on my -Desktop- put the computer in standby mode instead of turning it off?
if so, how?

go to control panel - performance and maintenance - power options - and go to the advanced tab....itll say "when i press the power button on my computer.....theres a drop down bar....choose what u want it to do....in your case....standby....and voila.....

the power button NO,
Have you tried from your Desk Top Start Button ?
Click the " Start " Button. Go to " Shut Down ", Click it,
When the " Shut Down Window " comes up, Just below the line that asks " What do yow want your computer to do ? "
There is a 'Choice' bar that you can shift , You should be able to find " Stand By " there.
