IF you have this "tracking software" previously installed on you laptop then sure. However, I suspect you didn't. There for I would say no. An IP address is not a social security number. Anytime you connect to the internet you could be using a different IP therefore what you have written down is probably now void. Sorry!

Absolute Software Corp. offers a service called Computrace, through which subscribers' laptops connect with an Internet server once a day. If a machine is reported stolen, it will be told to start checking in every 15 minutes the next time it connects to the server, explains Les Jickling, marketing manager at the Vancouver, British Columbia-based vendor. Using various databases, its IP address will be matched to a street address. The next knock on that door may be the police arriving to recover the machine.

geezzzzz, it just amazes me that people who have no clue are answering questions here. NO, is the answer. if you lost it, its gone.
you children that are leaving answers need to stop. when a computer boots, it gets its IP address from a router, routers hand out address's that are PRIVATE: 192.168.x.x
Private address can not be tracked on the net.
if it was possible to track a lost OR STOLEN computer, then police could help you, but they can't.

I would say no. Only way that might even come close to working is if it had a Static IP address. Since it's not in your possession that's not going to happen. Tracing by mac address might be plausible but I don't know much about that.

Yes, if it is on the Internet. You can ping the address on command prompt to see if its online by:
start
cmd
ping
You can use this website to trace a ip address:
http://www.ipligence.com/en/
you will get a free search there.

Yes most definitely you can. Jsut tell the company from which you bought the computer and it will show them a list of where the computer was last logged onto the internet. Then they track it and they can get it back for you. I lost my toshiba and it turnes out they tracked it for me and it was sitting under a chair at the bookstore called "BARNES AND NOBLE"
