A motor runs the heat &ac fans electric windows power seats power antenna etc. The engine powers the car down the road by way of transmission and rear axle or trans axle.

Essentially, if you are asking how it works rather than what it does (it makes the car move!), it is a machine that is constantly exploding internally when the fuel is ignited. This contained explosion moves a rod, which in turn moves other parts down the line, much like the gears on a watch where one movement creates another by contacting with the next part. eventually, this movement is transferred to the wheels through the driveshaft,and it turns them, making the car move forward.
