i found it helpful when moving to walk around one entire day with a notepad and pen and write down the things i used, because it's often the basic, everyday things you tend to forget....
also you will need handy things like a hammer, nails, some string, tape etc. for hanging, fixing ot assembling things.
moving is always a good opportunity to get rid of things you don't need anymore. throw out as much as you can (you'll think twice before packing things anywho seen as it's quite a hassle to pack, carry, transport, carry, unpack...)
and make sure you have the essentials (toothbrush, contacts, pjyamas, fresh set of clothes, etc...) all in one box, ready to grab (that is especially if you're arriving in the evening and unpacking the next day, or not unpacking all at once).
If you are moving an entire household (not just moving to a college dorm) i always found it best to put everything in boxes then label the boxes with numbers or letters and then have a list with the box numbers and what is in each box. That way, the first couple of weeks, you'll find things and the right box quickly.
keep in mind what the sizes are of the place where you have been living and where you will be living. is one place much bigger? does one place have much more storage room? or else, all of a sudden, you won't have enough room for certain things! also: never plan on filling the new home right from the start!! this will happen automatically as time goes by! make sure that is seems pretty bare and empty (in comparison to your old home) when you first move in!! when you move, its also a big change in your life and what seemed so comfy cozy and well-known in your old house, may just no longer fit into your new house (and life)...
so to be a bit less vague, i'd go through room by room too:
what pieces of furniture will you need? how many clothes are you keeping and where will you put them?
bedroom: bed, and 1-2 pieces of furniture for clothes, maybe books, and other things you just have in your bedroom (really depends on whether you have a closet or not!!)
bathroom: i'd take pretty much everything from here. throw out old body lotions, soaps etc. and bring the things you use at least once every 2-3 months. don't forget meds and things you'd feel helpless without like pain relievers, migraine meds etc...
kitchen: here also take pretty much everything with you, after all, the kitchen isn't where you're likely to have things cluttering....
but other than this i really can't help much, without knowing what you have, where you'll be living, but i'm sure you'll do a great job. i think usually, there's not a problem about leaving too many things behind, it's more a matter of forgetting small, yet very useful things i.e. the wrong things!

I am moving too so I definitely understand your question. I started boxing up today.
Declutter your belongings before you move, don't take the clutter with you. This will so cut down on your chaos in the new house. Look at it as a new lifestyle if you are a packrat.
There is stuff you can pack right now, no matter how long the move is from now.
Wall art and other decor items.
Holiday stuff (if that holiday isn't coming up)
All your stockpiled stuff minus whatever you need to get you through. That is, anything that is consumed (food, paper products, toiletries) but you have a lot of it.
Books, music, and DVDs...minus a few of each. So keep out only a handful of your very favs.
All your entertaining stuff. Candles, table linen, etc, big serving pieces. In the meantime, meet up with others at their house or in public...restaurant etc.
Then when you are within a week of the move, go round and pack more stuff up:
Most of your wardrobe.
Most of your kitchen.
On the last day, you should only really need to move the big furniture, unhook appliances.
Some stuff to live on while you are moving???
Paper plates.
Plastic bags, zipper bags.
Convenience foods and convenience appliances like your foreman grill, your crockpot, etc. These make food easy and you need that when you are planning a move.
Don't pack dibs and dabs of condiments, toiletries, etc. Use them up while you get ready to move, and discard the bulk of all these little amounts in big containers. On moving day, trash anything that is still there or leave non-food items for the next occupant...like the roll of TP in the dispenser.
Don't pack any cleaning supplies until you are on your way out of the house for the last time. This way they will be the first thing you bring into the new house in case you need to clean it before you start moving in. Plus you will need them right up to the last minute at the old house after you move furniture etc. Leave the small amounts (dibs and dabs) of cleaning supplies that aren't worth carrying with you, then the next occupant has a head start.
I left out a very important thing. Maybe you can remind me~ hahha.. If you have low energy light bulbs like me...the squiggle bulbs...TAKE them with you unless you are feeling mighty generous. They are about 5 dollars per bulb. First thing is to install them in your new house...but you should leave at least one bulb of some kind in each room.

It depends on what you have already and don't have.
Make a list of each room.
For example,
Bedroom- you need hangers for the closet, dresser, nightstand, alarm clock, (i keep my computer in my bedroom so I also would have the computer desk) then you have to think about curtins floor rug, sheets and blankets for the bed.
Then next page you do Bathroom
you need towels washcloths soap shampoo ect..
Next page you Do Kitchen
you need dishes, pots pans silverware, mirowave, cleaning supplies
Then you do Living room
TV
somekind of chair or couch end table maybe and a bookshelf
Just think about the size of each room and what you need basically to have that room function for you don't put too much stuff in right away becuase you might find out latter that you didn't need it or it is to big or doesn't fit the space it is easier to add the final touches after you have all your basics in place.
Good Luck!
