I'm talking apart from being an animal companion of a druid. I know that theirs don't cost anything.

In nearly all versions of D&D, only domesticated animals can be purchased. Any wild animals can only be gotten via roleplaying the encounter.

Obviously, rangers and druids have an advantage here, but so (possibly) do elves.

It also depends on the DM. Obviously, a Dire Wolf would likely be out of the question, as would a Werewolf, given that both are evil in alignment.

.. I'm going to assume your playing 3.5..

In that case; It's free, Pick up a few levels in Animal Handling and buy some rope to make a snare trap and then wait. Use Animal Handling on the Wolf and presto!

Oh, And if your DM gives you any trouble, leave the group and find another one.
