to be unique or difficult. But some people do it because of where the name comes from ex. spanish, italian, irish etc.

It is due to usually two notions...individuality or culture. Example, my name is normally spelled Jamie in the US, but in France it is Jaimie. The name Talulah is spelled that way in the US, but it is Talula in Ireland. Erik is more common in Scandinavian cultures, while Eric is more common in England the US. It has to do with translation from one language to another. A fantastic example is that Jesus or Yeshua is actually Joshua in English. However, now a days parents change the spelling to be cool and make sure their child has some differencece from all the Sara/Sarah and Ann/Anne's out there.
I personally do not think differen spellings are wrong, but some of them are out right silly. Example... placing z's where s's really need to go, etc. Parents do not take in account that it changes the pronounciation of the names and sometimes sound really off or offensive.

They are all ethnic differences.
Ann is British, Anne is French
Mark is Scottish, Marc is Latin
Sara is the British/Anglicized version of the Hebrew Sarah
Erik is Scandinavian, Eric is the Anglicized version
Or people just do it to be cute or original, which often leads well-meaning young mothers to take a beautiful name like Brittany and bastardize it into "Britni" or "Britney."

A lot of it depends on when and where they were born. Trends vary from place to place. Now adding replacing y's with i's is a huge thing around her. In some areas it is really popular to replace c's with k's.
When I was in college I went to work in an elementary school and was shocked to see all the traditional names spelled with an "eigh" on the end. Ashleigh, Carleigh, Kelleigh.
Many times old fashioned names come back in style but they want to add a little flare to them.
Also different countries spell names differently so depending on your heritage.
Just a matter of preference. SD

That's a good question I don't know why my middle name is Anne and I spell my daughters name Lilliana not Lillianna because i don't want people to say Anna and my oldest daughters middle name is Salina not Selena only because it
s after my husbands Aunt other then that I say spell it the normal way to many people are trying to hard to make simple names difficult

my personal opinion on this is that there are probably a couple of different reason. one would probably be that not everyone has the same taste, so some may like the spelling of one better then they like the spelling of another. for instance, my fiance wants to name our little girl haylee but i wasnt real sure bout the name, i did finally agree to it but i dont really like haylee with the "ie", i myself liked the look of "haylee" better! (as i said just ones opinion!) also, there are several different spellings for most names, so there are really no RIGHT way to spell a name!!! so if you like the spelling of one better then the other, obviously thats the one you go with! i also think that some people do it so that its different, yes it might sound the same but it will look different! it always comes down to the fact that not everyone likes the same things, everyone has their own likes and opinions!

It is cultural and language differences - the "French" , "European", "Irish" etc. spelling of names - some laguages have/do not have the same letters of the alphabet, so when they are translated into English, the spelling may change. This also has to do with the emphasis on the syllables - My son's name is Padraig, but in the US you spell it PATRICK. Almost the same pronunciation.

The reason is just really to be different from other people. It depends your culture and Country too. It would be boring to see just the basic names. Also Like my name is Ruby and in my B.C. it is Rubi it is spelled the Spanish way. Hope this helps.

It really is mostly personal preference -- but in some cases it is cultural or language based
for instance Marc -- is french
I think Erik -- is scandanavian
