I had them pierced. Three times, actually. My experience was rather frustrating.

First, my body began to reject the piercings around 4/5 months into my pregnancy (mind you, I'd had them for around 3 years at this point). So I took them out then, and never put them back in.

The problem for me was that there was NOT enough milk flow, I had the milk, but my baby wasn't able to get enough out to thrive because of all the scar tissue that had damaged my milk ducts or sinuses, whatever the part is in that area of the nipple. This could be due to the fact that I had each nipple pierced three times each, and at 14g once and 12g twice. There was alot going on in there.

Long story, My baby didn't gain weight fast enough and no one could figure out why. I had alot of problems from the beginning, bad latch, inverted nipples, sleepy/jaundiced baby, etc. etc. Eventually we both got raging thrush, and I developed a vasospasm in the nipples (google it, you'll laugh while cringing). It became very frustrating but I was determined to continue. I used a hospital grade breast pump on loan from the hospital, and eventually purchased the Medela Pump In Style Original ($250, which is, well worth the money!!!). Right now I am exclusively pumping for my almost four month old son, who is thriving beautifully. Not saying you can't breastfeed after having your nipples pierced, but my experience made it rather difficult.

Just stick in there, and don't hesitate to ask a Lactation Consultant for help, and tell them of ANY and EVERY problem you have!

**Edited to add**

I have also EXTREMELY sensitive nipps now, which would probably account for the soreness I experienced from day one and up until 2 1/2 months of him nursing. I still experience soreness even when pumping, but I've gotten used to it, and it doesn't bother me at all now.

I had one nipple pierced about 5 years ago before getting pregnant with my 2nd baby. Nobody could give me any advice about whether it would affect breastfeeding (fed my 1st for 15 months). I ended up taking it out at about 6 months into the pregnancy.
My daughter is now 5 months old and feeding well - however - the breast that had the piercing doesn't seem to produce anywhere near the milk as the other. I can only assume that the piercing damaged a milk duct. The breast is also a lot smaller than the non pierced one - due to less milk being produced. So I have never had a problem with too much milk flow (that's what I thought would happen too).
But my baby is thriving and thats all that matters.
Congrats and Good luck!

Like you said, take them out when you feed. But from what I've read (sorry, not pierced myself so I can't give my own experience), it shouldn't be a probem. Some women have increased sensitivity or possibly some leaking milk from the pierced area, but nothing serious. I put some links below, though, that might give you more information. Good luck and congrats on deciding to breastfeed!

my best friend had peirced nipples and nursed her son for about 18 months. She also had flat nipples, so that was a big challange for her to start with.

of course :) some women say that those piercings help the flow of milk, but you will have to take it out while you're feeding
