BET was started because, at first, MTV only featured white artists, claiming that they were a "rock only" station, and that black musicians did not sing rock.
However, when Micheal Jackson had hits like "Thriller" they decided to cash in and started including performers like him in their programming and selection.
Ironic how the black man who got on MTV first went white.

Why does this bother you? You are nto forced to watch the channel. Check out any national television station, you'll see plaenty of white people (WET). I personally watch BET myself because MTV is complete trash nowadays. BET allows blacks to have a voice because they are a MINORITY. Whites are the MAJORITY, they dont need another voice. And let's face, a channel full of white people would be boring.
Plus, I think BET was around before MTV but I am not 100 %.
