The girl at the pet store said the ink on the parot fish fades but the tattoo on the oscar is forever... I think she is full of it...?

It's forever, but does fade and get fuzzy over time. This is just the latest horrible abuse to those fish. Painted, dyed, tattooed, they are all terrible on the fish. I would highly encourage you to avoid buying fish treated in such a manner.

In addition to what the others have said, I would like to point out that most of the fish treated this way do not live through the tattooing process. The ones that do live are much more likely to get sick afterwards. I read a while ago that the injected "painted glassfish" have a 75% mortality rate. That is just the injection, not to mention getting sick after. Tattooing is a similarly stressful event in a small fish's life, I would imagine the mortality rates for tattooing would be about the same. I wouldn't patronize a place selling such fish, and I would tell them why. If you want a "modified fish" go for the glofish, they are genetically modified, meaning they are born with the "glow" and never go through any stressful procedures. I think they also come in several colors now.

Yeah, these fish are abused horribly. They're injected with dye that tears apart their immune systems and decreases their life expectancy dramatically. Also, the colors fade and make the fish sick. Just go for a naturally colored fish.
