I have backed up files to an external hard drive and to drive 'd' on my computer. I now want to add to these files (favorites I have added since the backup, for instance). Will the drives automatically only back up new stuff or is there something I must do to make this happen?

Windows own back up utility is able to do this for you. It can identify your current backup status and then perform an incremental backup at your direction. It will recognise exactly what has changed and just save the changed files. Use windows help to learn how.

If this is not sophisticated enough for you there are a number of backup programs that can be used.

Or you can manually perform the backup by using Windows Explorer and sorting files into date created order and then drag and drop.

The backup command should contain a parameter that will allow you to back up only those files modified since the last backup. It's simple in DOS and UNIX but I don't know how the Windows version works. There should be something either under preferences or options that will let you do it.

I recommend you to use incremental backup with Acronis True Image if you don't want to lose your time searching for differences in your backup. Incremental backup backs up only the changed data. I'm no programmer, so I would just open the folder and click View, Details.
Go to the column you want and click the heading to order ascending or descending.

select the first
Shift click the last
copy
go to destination
paste
