Yes, if you do too much at work then they expect it and when you cannot do that much it really hurts you and it also upsets less productive coworkers because it reflects poorly on them as well. If you excel too much they may promote you to a position with more work and responsibility that you may not want.

My husband also had the problem that they would run out of work and send him home early so he wasn't getting the number of hours he was supposed to or they took advantage of him because they knew he could do the work that usually took two people so they just didn't hire another person when one quit and made him do the work without giving him additional compensation.

Yes, you can. Every job has parameters and guidelines that must be followed. While taking initiative is a great thing, it IS possible to make decisions that are outside the scope of your authority and could result in a cost or problem to the company.

So the rule is, stretch the boundaries of your role, and learn new things, but don't assume you have authority that you may not have.

Yes. Too much initiative will make your coworkers hate you and make your boss feel threatened.
Your coworkers will feel pressured to do more, even if they are already overworked. You should work with the team, never pull ahead, stand out, or try to lead unless the boss asks for volunteers and everyone else has had a chance.
Your boss will think you want his/her job, or will ask him/her for a raise or a promotion, or will exceed your authority, or will go over his/her head with your "ideas".

Unless you are a jerk about it or try to step on other people to push yourself forward - work your hardest and be proud that you're not wasting any of your time :)

no i dont think so as long as its genuine, not to get a raise or promotion or anything like that. do it because work needs to be done and not for you to be recognized on false pretense.

Put yourself in your bosses shoes then ask that same question and there is your answer.
