From your experience, what do you think are the reasons for antagonistic behavior? I'm talking about people in real life who, whenever they get an "audience," have this annoying habit of handing out "put-downs" and slurs as if it's humorous to them.

Or, the people in forums who consistently post just insulting slurs, intended to enrage or bait others.

What is it about their character that drives them to do this? Is something lacking, and if so, what?

2. To make themselves feel superior or actually thinking they ARE superior.
3. Fear of trying to say something smart and sounding ignorant.
4. To be noticed (Getting attention)
5. To get a laugh.
6. Ignorance.

8. treating other people the way they, themselves have always been treated.

or last but not least

9. They really just don't like people.

I think it's a genuine desire to tell it like it is. Injecting the truth with humor draws more attention to the message and helps make it more thought-provoking. It's a little judgmental to say that another person is intending to insult, rage, or bait others.

Fear. They are faced with something new and don't know what to do. In the past, humor has worked, so they make fun. How they make fun, what they consider humorous depends a lot on what they were taught was acceptable. So we have autonomic nervous system and socialization combined to produce these folks.

I was a Psychology MAJOR in college. You are trying to read WAY more into people's personalities than you should based on one dimensional interaction with them (on a computer answers forum).
