the 360 can play all dvd formats =) but not blue-ray=(
Here's the full list of supported disc formats: DVD Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW. Xbox 360 is also capable of playing back the audio sessions of such CD formats as CD-Extra, Enhanced CD, etc.

The 360 Unit by itself will play any standard DVDs.
For HD you need to buy the HD-Drive (199.99). This still won't play blu-ray discs though.

not blue-ray. Anythign else. Although havent tried burned ones. Some older DVD players have problems with those.
