There is a string group (The String Quartet) that makes cover albums. They did do a version of this song, in fact a whole DM cover album. It may be what you're looking for. If not, I'd be interested to find the version myself, becuase DM is one of my favorite groups!

Depeche Mode is the best band for remixes. I have nearly all their singles just because their remixes are so cool. I don't recall a "jazzy" version of NLMDA as one of the remixes, though. There's the "Aggro" mix that is mainly electronic, and the "Split" mix which is just a longer version of the original, and the "Tsangarides" mix which has a slightly lighter and more distorted feel than the heavy original. Other than that, I'm not aware of any jazzy instrumental versions.

The best bet is the Symphonic Music of Depeche Mode album (by, I think, "The Ineffable Orchestra"). I was not too thrilled when I bought the MP3s online, the only songs being halfway decent were Enjoy the Silence and Higher Love. The whole CD sounds like MIDI music (NOT orchestral or jazz music). Anyway, it's all instrumental. The other covers I can remember all have lyrics. Smashing Pumpkins did a cover, as did Trey Lux. I think some band called Berlin also did a cover, but I've never heard it, so I cannot be sure.

I know Smashing Pumpkins did a cover of Never Let Me Down, so that could be the one you are thinking of.

There is also an album called something like "The Symphonic Music of Depeche Mode" which has many instrumentals of their various songs.,
