i live in lewis county and i'd like to plant some flowers and some vegetables. what do i have to do to the soil first? is it better to do container gardening?

go to hgtv.com & click on link for the gardener guy. Or you can try bhg.com. They will have a zone map that will help you see what grows best in your climate. Also have sample gardens to show you what goes best with what.

You have multiple climates in your state so can not answer such a broad question. Do you want flowers? vegetables? Your best bet is to use the recommendations of a local nursery..not the big box store like Loews's or Walmart. Also your local county extension agent can give great ideas for your specific yard. Find him or her in the phone book under**********[your county name] extension services or your state university listing.
