I just got my Wii hooked up and got it online and I see you can download a google search. It is just like it is on a computer? Can I check my e-mail? I'm not sure if I want to download it because of viruses. Can that happen on a Wii? I know nothing about them!

Yes you can get a "virus" on your Wii, but due to the nature of the Wii, there are probably not many viruses or trojans that are able to compromise it's hardware, as it functions differently from a computer.

I cannot see a reason for web browsing on a games console. Like xbox 360 does, keep hardware suitable to its task. pc for productivity, xbox 360 for gaming. I dont have a 360, but I use the pc for everything, and a DS Lite, for when out the house.

You can surf the Internet on the Wii. But it's not very convenient or easy to use. If you don't need it, I wouldn't bother with it. The news channel is good, though. Gives you all the major news for your area, and the interface is a lot easier to use.

As I understood it, it was a beta, and they were just testing to see what people thought of it..
