I've owned Ball Pythons for years and I think they're wonderful snakes. They generally have shy personalities and from my experience, they are very reluctant to bite. They tend to just curl up into a ball when they feel threatened.

The only problem some people have with them is that they can sometimes stop eating for months. It can be difficult to get them to eat if you're a beginner.

Since it sounds like you've never had a snake before, maybe consider a Cornsnake? They come in various gorgeous colors and they don't get too big either.

I have owned my ball python for the last two years now and he has been wonderful. Ball pythons are really the laziest snake out their. The only problem I have with mine is that fact that he is an escape artist and I hear that that is pretty common in ball pythons. but my snake has never bitten me and I can even let my 5 year old cousin play with him without worring if my snakes going to do something. I think that ball pythons are excellent first snake pets. There low maintnence and really laid back. I hope this information will help you in the future.

We're caring for two ball pythons for my brother-in-law and they're fairly tame. They sit under their log all day baking in their heat lamp and don't really like to be handled. When they are handled, they want somewhere to hide but when they find a nice home under your shirt, they're perfect lambs.

They can grow up to 3 feet long and can get somewhat aggressive if they're uncomfortable or hungry, but for the most part they just want to be left alone, or failing that, somewhere to snuggle up on you.

A general rule of thumb is that the perimeter of the cage (2 times the width plus 2 times the length) should be equal to at least 2 times the length of the snake. For example, a 5-foot snake would need a cage with a perimeter of at least 10 feet, e.g.; a 3' x 2' cage.

We have 11 ball pythons, 2 dumerills boas, 9 red tail boas and 4 burmese pythons.
All the Ball Pythons are very sweet and have wonderful personalities, with the exception of one of our females. She has been a biter since the day we brought her home. My husband is the only one that can handle her and only for a couple of minutes at a time.
Our red-tails are all pretty affectionate, also. Boas to tend to freak people out around here because they do look menacing and they are very alert. (Where a python will move its eyes to follow you, a boa will actually turn its head)
Our Dumerills are the biggest problems. They are kind of anti-social and really don't care to be held. They accept it, they just don't like it much.
The Burmese we have are all very social and like to hang out with us. Our green burm, Bob, is an attention hog. Our burms are also very vocal and "talk" alot when we come into the room or reach into their enclosures.
The sad part about burms, though, is 2 of our 4 burms were given to us because their previous owners didn't realize they would get so big.

my fox snake is back in arizona (i'm living in new york because of business). she's fun and a bit restless after getting too much sun. she's quite amiable enough - my sister took her with her during trick or treating the other year but she didn't like the cold much.

snakes are usually gentle and languid. they'd make fine pets. a ball python sounds like a good start if you'd like to own a snake for a pet.

well I have three ball pythons and they have been nothin but wonderfull'it seems to me that they have a very good disposition about them as I had never had a violent one, they are extremely easy to care for,my 3 year old holds mine all the time,a ball python will only reach about 4 feet in length at the max.I have 1 burmese pythonn that is 12 feet long and she is rather expensive to feed but burmese can be a bit edgy when they get three times the size as you are so I wouldnt recommend it if you have children.a ball is the way I would go they are very gentle from what I have learned.

i own two ball pythons one normal female and a pastel male, two columbian boa's (mating pair), 2 brazilian rainbow boa's (hope to breed) and a jungle carpet python. they are great pets as long as you choose a good "starter snake", ball pythons are good starters they get medium sized (4-5 ft) with a great personality and willingness to be handled (just get a captive bred they have less tendencies to not eat), cornsnakes are good starters and average 4- 5ft also (just alot skinnier than a ball), columbian boa's are great starter snakes also as they have a wonderful temperment the one drawback is they can reach 9 ft so a LARGE enclosure will be required within a couple years. i will list alot of great sites for you to reasearch as you will have to make the FINAL decision plus you should research, research, research PRIOR to purchasing so your new reptilian buddy has a great life with you.
good luck and happy herping

I haven't had a snake since I found a California King caught in a rat trap. I freed him and kept him till he was healthy and set him free in the brush.
