What was the storyline of Halo 1 & 2 before Halo 3 comes out?

Hey, i'm wondering what the halo storyline was in halo's 1&2 i've had a ps2 until this year where i bought myself a xbox 360. I'm wondering why Halo is so great and what is halo and what is the story :)

HALO: first person shooter that takes place on a mysterious ring world named Halo. Set in in the year A.D. 2552, it focuses around a war between humans and a technologically advanced alliance of alien races known as the Covenant, who are united by their fanatical religious beliefs in a mission to eradicate humanity. Two days before the story begins, Covenant forces launch an assault on the second largest human installation, Reach, and destroy it. A single starship, the Pillar of Autumn, survives the alien onslaught carrying the last known SPARTAN-117, the "Master Chief". The ship initiates a random jump to Slipspace, hoping to lead the enemy away from Earth. Following coordinates chosen by the onboard A.I. named 'Cortana', they jump to a ring which orbits a planet. This ring is called Halo. Halo was built by a mysterious group of people in the distant past called "The ForeRunners". It was created to stop a parasitic race called "The Flood" in a massive war between the two. You must stop the Covenant from activating Halo, while faced with a massive three way war fought over immense and beautiful landscapes.

HALO 2: The game opens with Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson receiving awards aboard Cairo Station, a MAC gun platform orbiting Earth, alongside Miranda Keyes. Miranda is the daughter of Captain Keyes, who died during the course of Halo: Combat Evolved, and Miranda is accepting a posthumous award for her father's bravery.[15] This ceremony is juxtaposed with the judgment and torture of the former Covenant Elite Supreme Commander of the Fleet of Particular Justice, who is being punished for his incompetence. Both events are in response to the destruction of Halo during the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. The Master Chief and newly promoted Sergeant Major Johnson are awarded medals for their bravery and sacrifice, and the unnamed Covenant admiral is being tortured for his inability to prevent the destruction of Halo. It is also revealed that the Covenant's interest in Halo lies in the belief that the activation of Halo would bring about the "Great Journey", which would cleanse the universe of lesser lifeforms (including the Flood) while providing salvation for the Covenant..........

Everyone says they are the best games ever, but I don't know if they could be considered the best. They are a lot of fun to play though =P

Well, if you go to wikipedia and search Halo 2, you can find the whole plot line. Halo 3 is coming out in November I think (for your 360). What everyone loves about Halo is that it's one of a kind. There is no other game with that much action, that good of a story line, and the ability to play on both sides. If you want to know the plot line, I suggest going to gamefaqs.com, there are alot of walkthroughs which will contain all the plot info

actually the best way to find out is to read the halo novels:
1) the fall of reach
2) the flood
3) first strike
4) the ghosts of onyx

they're all in paperback and can be found in any major bookstore
