Stevens is one of the (if not THE) best defensemen in the history of the NHL. My definition of a "goon" is someone who's out there just to cause trouble and stir up negative emotions of the other team. Stevens never did that. First off, the guy did have a 78-point season (with the Devils, I might add...you dumb people who think they're "boring"). But aside from that, his real strength was his presence on the ice. The opposing team could never go out there calmly.....they always had that notion that Stevens was somewhere nearby. When he delivered his hits, 99.9% of them were CLEAN and in open ice. A goon would be cheap with his hits (from behind, boarding, etc).
Stevens was a master of the position.

A goon is someone who makes dirty hits and starts fights with star players. These are things Stevens doesn't do. The people that call him goon are Flyers fans who were upset that Lindros got hurt from a clean hit. Stevens goes out to do his job, keep the other team from scoring. This is the same way he has played since he was with the Capitals. I'm in no way biased because I'm a Pens fan.

No way, his hits were hard and damaging yes, but clean. For me, to be a goon, you need more cheap shots and elbows and the like. And Doris, why should Stevens have been suspended for a clean hit with his shoulder? You have to keep your head up, Lindros apparently forgot this. Anyone who thinks he was a goon basically doesn't know hockey or is just incredibly biased. It's all about intimidation.

No he's not a goon he was good at his job during a decade which stressed slow defensive trap hockey.
He never went looking for fights o rwas specifically put on the ice to hit people. He was put on the ice vs the best players because he had the know how and ability to prevent those players for scoring.
On a side note to say he might have been the best defenseman in NHL is very false. There is no such thing as a best player in any sport for any position ( thats right i am saying it not even wayne gretzky) because sports are so different from era to era it's hard to compare players from different times. Including how do you compare defenseman, to forwards, to goalies?

G- Brodeur, how would Plante cope with super pads for the 1st time? D- Bobby Orr, effortless D- Lidstrom, maximum suitable 2 way defender in the sport as we talk RW- Jagr, for as lots bags as he has, nevertheless an staggering skills C- Lemieux, some homer bias right here, yet extremely think of he would have made a run at fairly some Gretzky information if he did no longer get injured/maximum cancers. extra actual of a presence too. Goon- Probert, knew him extra appropriate coach- Bowman, the guy has been a winner everywhere he is going i became bypass with the Las Vegas Roulette

Not a chance, Scott Stevens was the backbone of the Devils and the reason they played as tough as they did. I don't see that same toughness and tenacity with the team now and I think that hurts them in the playoffs.
And in response to the Lindros hit...well, hey, he was going to get a concussion anyway (how many does he have, like 10?)it was just a matter of who was going to lay the hit that would do it.

The NHL needs more players like Scott Stevens. It's a shame he retired.
He gave good HARD CLEAN hits.
The people still crying about the Lindros hit should watch the video again and refresh their memories. It was a CLEAN hit. Lindros STILL hasn't learned to keep his head up.

Scotty was an old time NHLer in the modern game. He handed out hits that turned guys into jellyfish. I think Martin Brodeur really misses him.
He wasn't a goon. He played a clean game. He just played it tough and hard every shift.
