My wife started on it today and I am not sure how it works. Like after the first seven days is it safe to have intercourse all the time or do you have to stop when the last day of the pill is up, those few days before her period?

If she takes the pill exactly as directed (as in every single day without skipping) then she will have continuous contraceptive protection, even during the week when she has her period.

The pill works by tricking the body into believing it's already pregnant, so the body does not release an egg (ovum) for fertilization. In the highly unlikely event that the body does ovulate, the pill also makes the uterine lining too thin to be usable, and it also makes the vaginal canal secretions inhospitable to sperm.

Please just ALWAYS remember that NO method is 100% effective. The pill in common everyday usage (meaning allowance for human error) is about 95% effective (or 5 out of 100 users will become pregnant).

birth control pills work by stopping ovulation or fertilization. some would say wait a full cycle before having unprotected intercourse, but the minimum is 7 days. if she takes the pill every day at the same time, there is no day where it will not be safe to have intercourse.

It's ok to have sex on any day of the pills. However, since she just started it today, you would still need to use back up methods (condoms, if she is taking it so she won't get pregnant) because her body needs to get used to the pill, which takes a while.
