what model is it? this completely depends on what model you have. some models allow for you to just take it out, others aren't so forgiving and, like my dell dimsion desktop's floppy drive, will not come out at all.
personally, since dell has customer support, I'd ask them first about ways to take it out.

Play with it. At worst you scratch something, but it wont be that bad I am sure of it.
First thing is first,
1. SHUT DOWN PC and unplug.
2. Find out how to open the tower.
There are many ways. Some are screwed in place, while others have quick releases. If you tower is older, lets say 5+ years you will probably have to unscrew 2 - 6 screws. Also, it is typical for only one side to open, so look all around before you start unscrewing. It should be obvious.
3. Take off cover, and look for open to the front of the tower, where the CD drive is exposes.
4. Unplug and unscrew CD drive.
5. Remove and replace with new drive, or just disregard space.
6. Work on putting everything back together.
Then plug and turn on PC.

Dell are the worst company (it's true, hehe) when it comes to unscrewing, fitting, unfitting, etc etc, different components in and out of your computer.
Try googling a diagram for your tower and work from there.
^^ If that made any sense :P ^^
Please people:: don't buy Dell computers there RUBBISH!

OK, you don't have as much elbow room inside a laptop as you do inside a desktop, but the same basic rule applies - if it could be fitted on the production line, it can be removed!

circulate to my laptop and precise click on the cd stress and decide eject selection. if this does not paintings, get a small pin/needle or paper clip and look on the cd stress, there could be a tiny hollow that as quickly as you place the pin into, the tray will open manually
