When I first bought my house, the grass was great, but last year I couldn’t afford to water it as often as the previous owners. This year I want my yard to be beautiful again. I have some weeds and bald spots but the grass that I do have is st Augustine. Please help!!

1. Water deeply NOT frequently. (I water 30-45 mins twice week.)
2. Water in the morning NOT at night. (prevent fungus)
3. Raise mower to highest setting.
4. Texas Tea is a good organic fertilizer...you can use it anytime and it will NOT burn your yard.
Chemicals will work for awhile but your yard will get weak and unhealthy and you will end up spending more money to fix the problems caused by the stuff you used to fix the problems.

Unfortunately St. Augustine is a very thirsty grass. I live in Texas as well, and longer, but less frequent watering is most beneficial as it encourages the roots to grow deeper. Mow at a height of 2 1/2" to prevent shocking it and never cut more than a 1/3 of the blade of at a time. Make sure the mower blade is sharp - needs to be sharpen about once a season. My advice is if you have a mulching blade on your mower, use it and don't bag. The nutrients remaining in the cut grass are returned to the soil and act as a natural fertilizer. As long as you keep up with regular mowing, the grass clippings won't look tacky on your yard.

Find grasses which are native to your region. They require less water and attention. Try to stay away from grasses which do need a lot of H2O.
I myself live in the San Antonio area and never planted any grass because of the drought problems. I chose natural grasses and wildflowers instead. Looks pretty on my 2 acres, the Bluebonnets are coming up.
Do something like that and you'll have more pleasure and free time. Birds and butterflies will appreciate it, too.

You must water on a regular basis to keep St. Augustine grass alive.Your best bet is to replant with Bermuda.

Be careful with fertilize. With St. Augustine you need to make sure that it is not too strong because it will burn your grass. Make sure the packaging specifies St. Augustine and follow the directions.
