Believers continue with their philosophies, because they have been influenced to do so. Religious philosophies have been around for a long time which helps to influence that it must be correct if it has been by so many generations. A lot of believers also have been raised to be religious and are not going to change, this group tends to be ignorant (ignorant meaning not knowing) to any other ideas. Another group of believers have their philosophies simply, because they are afraid what will happen to them when they die. What it all comes down to is that people have religious philosophies from 50% genetics and 50% environmental influences.

In general, I think that the masses allow their belief system(s) to be a matter of environmental conditioning, because they are too mentally lazy to do the work required to form their own opinions.

Can you name any human characteristic that is not pervasive and enduring?

Well, so what? Humans see the wonderful mysterious world around them and a question presents itself : What the .....??? That would be what Teillard de Chardin called "a God-shaped blank" in the mind. We want an answer and that a "god" created all this is fairly acceptable if you consider the complexity of life and our own mysterious behaviour. Certainly our actions and decisions are to a great extent based on our knowledge that life will be finite for us. But we CHOOSE a religion for a code of living, for a set of standards to live up to, not because we're afraid to die. Just because we are unfortunately AWARE of our mortality does not mean everything is about death. It is equally about life!

I'm not sure from where you are getting your statistics, but it sounds like, to me, you made them up on the spot.

I could say that 50% of atheists do not believe in God because they were brought up being told that there was no God and are ignorant (ignorant meaning not knowing) to the facts about Christianity that exist. The other 50% are simply too confused by the idea of an immaterial entity, such as God, when in reality, they use them every day (the laws of logic, the laws of morality, etc.).

But then again, I'm not one to make up statistics on the spot.

By the way, superstition was also the most pervasive and enduring characteristic of human culture.

Genetics as a basis for religious belief? Would you care to show me where they have mapped the religion gene? Is it dominant or recessive? Put the the bong down scooter and take a nap.

What is your question? It sounds as if this is the beginning of a thesis.
