First of all, let's get you that (FREE) owners manual. It is a pet peeve of mine for vehicle owners NOT to have a manual!

If it isn't an auto-dimmer (first response), it is probably a flip button to move the mirror for night use. Most rear-view mirrors are wedge-shaped; for daytime use, the reflective surface at the back is used; for nighttime use, the mirror is moved so that the reflection you see is from the front of the glass. It does not reflect as much light, so car headlights behind you are not as blinding.

If it has a little green light next to it I bet it is an auto dimming feature on the mirror. Green auto dims the mirror at night when a car approaches from the rear

It could be your Onstar button, it might just not be activated.
