The name of the tribes who civilised Egypt is unknown. It is thought that they came via the land link with southern Europe.
They called the land where they settled by both Kemet and Misr.
The names have been in use since early dynastic times.
There were already people living in Egypt since Paleothonic times, and their campsites have been excavated and many artifacts retrieved. As well as investigation of their burial sites, which show a from of ritualistic burial was in use even then..
It was not until the Greeks came to see the many wonders that traders had told them of, that they began to use names such as Egypt, and Thebes, which was originally Uset or Waset.
The early civilisation took place near the Delta region along the raised areas near the Nile.
The people began farming, herding and living in fixed dwellings in a tribal civilised way around 5.000B.C.Giving up their previous, semi nomadic existence and wanderings
We know that civilisation expanded and advanced rapidly from 3100 BC and by the time that the first Pharaonic Dynasty there were several nomes or states in existence. As well they had as established trade routes with other rising civilisations.

Egypt was the first organized and civilized community to be known according to the history and monuments, that's why they call it the mother of the world. It's very interesting to research in the topic. According to my knowledge and my understanding to your question King (Narmer) united upper and lower Egypt and it's the only country to keep the same area and borders along the history.
Again don't forget that may be Egypt was united before king Narmer, but not recorded in the history books that I knew.
