What are the economic arguments for an EU security policy?

I cannot see how economic success can be related to security. Maybe I need educating here.
I can understand why farms are keep going by subsidy so we do not starve in the next big war. Like we nearly did in WW2. Aparrently the humble potato and its vitamin c saved many people from starvation.

It helps make the EU a united force, much like the US.
