I would go to Brazos Bend State Park. I've been there a couple of time, but never camped there. The park is very pretty. They have miles of hiking trails and equestrian trails. There is also the George Observatory which has a 36in telescope.
...just make sure you take your gator bait! lol :D Lots of gators out there.
Here's link for more info about the park:

Campsites Near Houston

A relatively unknown area is at the Double Lake campground in the Sam Houston National Forest (go to ReserveUSA). It's a nice quiet campground on the edge of a small lake with swimming and canoeing.
In cool weather, Brazos Bend is a very good choice. Lots of deer and critters running around and there's an observatory onsite. The George Ranch is just up the road. The problem is getting an open reservation.
I would also agree with Stephen F. Austin as a second choice. It's a nice wooded park; but there's not a whole lot to do or see in the immediate area.
I'm sure some of the mom and pop KOA's in the area are nice; I just have always preferred the parks.
And, if you like the beach. there's also camping in the sand on Galveston Island State Park.

Best Camping Near Houston

Well, first of all this time of year is when campsites in the Houston area do most of their business. We went to Stephen F. Austin State Park the weekend before last and the shelters were all booked and half the campsites were already taken (and 2/3 of the RV sites were used). I think you'll see this until June, when it gets too hot (especially for Brazos Bend... remember that gators are cold blooded and like warmer weather).

Try Stephen F. Take I-10 (Katy Freeway) to exit #723. Turn right and go north up FM1458 for about 3 miles (through the "downtown" area of San Felipe) until you see the signs for the park. Turn left and follow the road to the ranger station.

Be sure to reserve in advance, to be sure you get a site. Go here:

You'll need to set up an account (it is free), but you'll be able to book a site over the net. It may be too late for this weekend, but try anyway.

Have fun! Hiking trails, nature trails, some fishing, golf, and best of all, no gators.

Like Model Fly said Brazos Bend State Park it is a really interesting and fun. i have been camping there. He also said the George something observatory which is also fun. You can see the planets through telescopes. Their are lots of alligators some come in your path while you walk. You see snakes i almost got bit by one!!!!!!!!
Another place is Jesse Jones Park. It is here in Houston though. It is not as fun as Brazos Bend, i guarantee you'll like it if you love camping.
Have fun
if you go.

Try checking out the site below. The rates are really low and they've been in business for over 40 years.

There is a burn ban all over this part of the state. You can't build camp fires right now. Too dangerous.
