it is illegal to do this, as you cant be paying tax etc....

but as someone said it depends on what job ur doing, if its bar work or similar, they never ask for nie number,, as it is a cash in hand deal, ie-illegal, but if u wanted to get a proper job then u will need one,
for the sake of 6 euros why not get one??!?!?!......

but yeah it is illegal, its not a massive thing, but it does affect things like health care etc, as u havenot paid any tax.

As from 28/03/07 you will not need Residencia, but you will need an NIE number if you want to work legally. I only read this in the local paper yesterday. However, the buy a spanish car, rent a flat or open bank account: you will need an NIE number. It is best to pay a bit more and apply through a 'Gestor' (hestor) and save yourself alot of hassle. Good Luck. Ed.

you need a NIE number or to be a European citizen in order to work legally in Spain ... however many companies would give you a job even without the NIE as long as you accept a miserable salary, it is all corrupted and they avoid taxes as much as they can .... Salaries in Spain are very very small and life is more expensive than in the states.

You have to get one to get a contract and you shouldn't really be working without one. But, it is so easy to get. Go to the local police station with your passport and fill in the form. You might have to wait in a queue for a while but at least you will have your nie number - it doesn't cost anything. So why not?

Well as you can't work legally in Spain without one, then your answer is a resounding YES!!
If you are employed by a UK company and are paid by them (even in euros) they and you will be paying tax in the UK so you can officially work anywhere in the EU, as long as the tax is declared and paid somewhere and you can demonstrate this fact.
However, if you wish to work illegally then yes you can, but of course apart from it being illegal you won't be able to get medical treatment, or have any benefits of money going towards your retirement through your tax payments.

It's just make life easier all round and there are plenty of benefits of having one. As others have said it is illegal to work without one but it won't stop you finding casual work and Spanish people are pretty anarchistic anyway - I love em. I'd suggest you just get one, if you're an EU citizen (communitario) it's quite straight forward these days. If you're not EU then it is more complicated.
