"The closer you are to someone, the more likely you are to step on their toes."

I'm thinking it means that, for example, you're more likely to be rude to your best friend than an aquaintance.

If you agree, then why is it that people take anger out on those closest to them?

i think it means that the closer you are to a person the more likely you are to clash on some things. that may be just because you know more to clash on. also i think its because when people are close they show their ture personalities more, meaning they wouldnt hold back from disagreeing about something.

i think people take out their anger on those closest because people struggle to handle their frustration. when people are frustrated they lash out. the fact is that those close to you are closest and thus are more likely to catch the brunt of it. also when people are close, they let their guard down more and show their true personality more. so whereas a guy dating a woman for a week might not lash out on her if he's pissed because he doesnt want to look bad. a married guy doesnt care and will lash out at his wife.

I do agree and my reason for why people take out anger closest to them is the fact that I believe sometimes anger is a cry for help and those closest to you and know you best will definitely be the ones who can truly help.

I do agree with u.actually this statment made me face myself by this question because I'm someone who can step on toes of those close to him.(and feel really bad for this)
or to be exact,I used to be.and let me try to answer u.
if I ask myself why can accept to talk in a rude way with my mother will I can't do it with my prof although my mother made a lot for me.I can say that what makes me dare is that I m sure that my mother may feel sad that her child would do it to her but she will never stop loving me and will forgive me anything I do.while it's not the same about any one else.
I also think that people tend to look in their best mood in front of strangers and cover their reality inside.
it's like a mask u wear outdoors and wear once u step in ur home.
but as I told u I thought few months ago what if I continue this way with my mother and one day she dies ....my answer was I prefer to keep silent all the time and obbey to her but not loose her.
so I changed a bit and believe me everyone can change himself if he really want.

Taking out your anger on a person is also rude. We are most likely to abuse someone we know well, because we feel we know them almost as ourselves.
Who's a man's worst enemy? Himself.
Who does a man treat as well as himself? His best friend.

Another saying is, "Familiarity breeds contempt". This is another way to say the same thing. The more familiar we are with someone, the more we take them for granted, and the more likely we are "to step on their toes"

I agree, and people take anger out on those closest to them because they are the most easily accessible and they are the most likely to forgive.

Refer to the quote "Familiarity breeds contempt". It's the same thing. The more time you spend with someone, the more you see of their faults, and the more you start 'stepping on their toes or visa versa'.

Familiarity gives you the false confidence that you are allowed to chide your best friend, but he (read everybody) is very touchy. We all are. Don't like criticism.

I agree with your take on it. As to your second question I think that is because they expect more from a friend that from a stranger and if they are slighted the hurt is that much greater and they reaction out of instinct rather than stiffling it as they would if it had been a stranger or distant aquaintence that had offended.

That is my take any way.

I think i agree with your interpretation as ive always said to myself on more than one occasion (not that I'm mad or anything by talking to myself i mean) that " familiarity breeds contempt" meaning the better you know a person then your more likely to take advantage of a persons good nature.
what we all should do is have respect for our close associates and respect for ourselves.
Life is for enjoying and not hurting anyone in the process.
Including our elves.

One aspect of your query is the idea that if you are close to someone, you know how far to push them without being pushed back.

So, if you conclude that someone close to you can be mistreated without recourse, you may opt to attack them rather than a stranger who may not be so indulgent.

I personally feel that this type of conduct is abhorrent and unacceptable. However, that doesn't mean that people don't do it.
