I always wanted a small puppy, especially a golden retriever. My parents were always telling me that I wouldn't be able to take care of a dog. They say that a big dog would cause big mess inside the house but I tell them all the time that we could keep it in the garden. Then, it is the ''poopies'' things. (I don't really want any other dog breed!)

Like a previous poster said, golden retrievers generally have good temperaments and are usually good "beginner dogs," if you will, as they aren't usually too dominant. However, remember that dogs are individuals too, so some might not fit the bill.

I was just wondering if you have looked into adopting? Golden retrievers are generally common in shelters, rescues, pounds, and it would be great if you could save a life. www.petfinder.com is a great site to search for some near your area. Buying dogs nowadays, unless you are POSITIVE you are buying from a responsible breeder who does genetic testing and other crucial physical checks, is not ethical. I would suggest you do some research about puppy bills and irresponsible backyard breeders and reconsider your stance on buying.

Rescues are a nice venue to look into, as they normally will be able to tell if one of their dogs would fit your lifestyle.

However, I admit I am a bit worried about your statement "I tell them all the time that we could keep it in the garden." Dogs are social creatures, and goldens are especially family oriented. It would NOT be fair to keep the dog in the garden unless it's only for playtime. Their home should be inside, with you.

If you don't feel like putting the time and effort into house training a puppy, you're probably not ready for one. I look at keeping dogs as a privilege, you have to be responsible. Puppies tend to need obedience training and a whole lot more. If you're still set on a dog, I would recommend an older one, one that is already trained. Maybe join a dog-oriented forum to learn more information.

I really hope that if you do get a dog, you'll stick to your promise to your parents and take the best care of it. Please don't give up simply because he/she has a behavior problems or others. Work to make them better.

Good luck.

I have 2 golden retrievers and....

1) They love to play. LOVE IT. They are always willing to go for a run with you and meet new dogs

2) They are very social and people and FAMILY friendly

3) They are very loyal and will bark at strangers coming near your house--which will intimidate them and ward off any burgulars however goldens are not aggressive and their bark is lowder then their bite-- so they will not attack.

4) They are very smart, they can learn a number of tricks and are easily potty trained-- both of mine were potty trained within 3 weeks of coming home.

5) They arent as destructive and hyper as other dogs, such as dalmations... they dont chew as much especially if they have rawhides which they LOVE.

6) They dont really need any special care except for the occasional joint supplements when they get older, because hip problems and arthritis is common in the real old golden retriever dogs.

7) They are the best friends you could ever ask for, they will sleep in your bed, by your bed and mine follow me all around the house.

8) They are very friendly with other animals, mine love our cats and are always submissive towards other dogs.

9) They are great camping and outdoors dogs that you can take with you almost any where you go... They love swimming and the outdoors!

10) They aren't noisy, most goldens don't bark when they want something like other dogs such as pomeranians and other small dogs. You rarely hear them bark unless they are playing with eachother or barking at a strange figurine in the night ( whatever it may be, a bag blowing in the breeze...etc...)

11) Goldens are NOT dominent agressive type dogs and they aren't known to be. They will not EVER mistake you for being on their same level and they will always treat you as if you are the boss, especially if you train them right.

12) They are hardy dogs, they dont need special beds, special feed, and they can be outside all day in the summer if they want (as logn as they have fresh water and a shaded area.) They dont get tired out easy!

You should really get one, they are great!! You will always have someone that unconditionally loves you and greets you at the door when you walk in.

i have 2 golden retrievers one is 2 years old the other 17 weeks theyre both very loving and brilliant with people and other animals. they can be quite boisterous and easily excited but train easily. they dont cause a mess. as a breed they are known for chewing and mine have had the odd chew at things but all puppies do. they are very cute puppies and look pretty when older. i can do anything to them like grooming/clipping nails and they dont bother. i work in a veterinary practice and ive never seen a naughty retriever!
